BUMITAMA MUST STOP ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF ORANGUTANS

For immediate release on March 13rd 2013-The Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) join forces to urge Bumitama Agri to stop destroying forested area of Tumbang Koling in Central Kalimantan. It is an important habitat for 11 protected species including orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), sunbear (Helarctos Malayanus), gibbon (Hylobates sp) and slow loris (Nycticebus coucang).

Bintang Dian Pertiwi, Habitat Campaigner of Centre for Orangutan Protection states as follow:
“Based on our survey on 18-20 June 2007, we have identified the forested area as the habitat of 11 mammals species and 34 birds species, including orangutan. Thus, Bumitama Agri as the member of RSPO should not endanger the lives of orangutans.”

On 29 April 2008, the Central Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Center confiscated 1 (one) young orangutan from a pest control officer of PT Nabatindo Karya Utama, a subsidiary of Bumitama Agri. On July 3rd, 2012 the local community burned that forested area to be converted as plasma plantation of PT Nabatindo Karya Utama. On March 6th, 2013 they stopped the land clearing activity. Approximately, 125 hectares of the forested area had been damaged.

In regarding to the Law no. 5/1990 concerning Conservation of the Living Natural Resources and Its Ecosystem, Article 21 (2) point (e) states that Anyone is prohibited to take, damage, abolish, trade-in, store or possess eggs and/or nests of protected animals. And concerning to the Article 40 (2) Anyone who purposely commits in violation of provisions as contemplated in Article 21 paragraph (1) and paragraph (2) and Article 33 paragraph (3) shall be subjected to imprisonment of maximum 5 (five) years and fine of maximum Rp 100.000.000 (one hundred million rupiah).

On 17 October 2012, Bumitama Agri has acquired an 80% stake in PT Nabatindo Karya Utama. Bumitama Agri is a registered company in Singapore and also a member of Roundtable Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) with registered number 1-0043-07-000-00 since 8 October 2007. Benvika, Campaigner of Jakarta Animal Aid Network states as follow:

“This is a crime. As member of RSPO, Bumitama Agri should not endanger the lives of orangutans.”
